Stormchase Leads to a Night of Lightning Crawlers

Ahh the monsoon season is here and of course that means spectacular light shows like these lightning crawlers.

Last night I got a late start down to Tucson for the first big storm chase of the season. That pesky day job keeps getting in the way of my storm chasing. Nonetheless I made the trip to see if I could get still get something before it was over.

As the night unfolded it seemed like I was headed for a bust. It wouldn’t be the first time as every storm chaser knows nothing is guaranteed. I met up with my buddy Bryan Snider at “A” mountain in Tucson. From there we grabbed some sunset shots and waited for the approaching storm. The strikes came but were pretty far off so my wide angle proved useless.

We considered packing up but the radar showed one more storm building to the east. After making the decision to stick out we drove east and set up shop. The lighting came but was mainly in the sky known as lightning crawlers. Nonetheless I was happy to get something on this first trip.
