Wasteland

Today we go monochrome for the Arizona desert. I have always been a huge fan of black and white photography and this image just screamed for b&w to me.
I took this shot back in the fall of last year out at Lost Dutchman State Park. It was late afternoon and I was fortunate to have the clouds and the sun present. The partial lit mountains you see off in the background did not last long. I remember waiting next to my tripod for the sky to open up and let just a little bit of sunshine paint the range. This is the life of landscape photography. You ask Mother Nature for all kinds of scenarios (golden light, great clouds, etc) and you pray she is in a cooperative mood.
My window of opportunity didn’t last long but I was prepared and grabbed my shots before she changed her mind. I’ve said it in countless posts about how I am drawn out to this area. I can never put my finger on it but I always enjoy the Lost Dutchman area and especially the Superstition Mountains.

Great composition, Chris. I like the way you have lined up the two cacti to the left. Waiting for that moment of sunlight on the mountains was well worth it – the shot is greatly enhanced by their illumination.
