I absolutely love black and white photography.  Why I don’t try more is beyond me at the moment.  I do hope to change that as I recently purchased Nik’s Silver Efex Pro and look forward to using it for some creative monochrome images.  With that aside let’s get to today’s image.

This is the bridge that the Durango Silverton narrow gauge railroad passes through when it makes it way into or out of Durango.  I found it interesting that it was made from steel and wood.  I didn’t get a chance to check the history but I’m sure the wood section is original with the steel structure being a later add on.  It spans the Animas River so I don’t know if part of the original was washed out or not.  I’ll have to look into that.

To help increase the perspective of the track I used a little FP by OnOne.  Hopefully my next bw image will be processed with the new Nik software.

Until next time…

Camera: Canon 40D with a Tamron 17-35mm zoom

  1. Love how you lead our eyes down the tracks to the distant hills beyond. Beautiful tonal range; the tack sharp rich blacks and bright whites contrast effectively with the soft blur around the frame.

  2. Like the use of FP here, nicely draws the eyes inward. The black and white really gives this a historical feeling – like an image from years ago! Nice job!

  3. Gorgeous shot Chris. I love B&W and also ask myself why I don’t use it more often. I’m trying to change that and am considering purchasing Nik’s Silver Efex. Let me know how you like it.

  4. You’re going to enjoy Silver Efex I think. If you haven’t already done so, you should also learn how to manipulate B&W tones in Lightroom. I use Aperture, but they have similar capabilities, and sometimes am happy not to use Silver Efex. It looks like perhaps you might have done some of that here, but I cannot tell so I’m cautiously erring on the side of telling you something you already know.

    1. Thanx Mark. I do use LR for bw. I’ve got some decent presets that get me close and then I just tweak. Really looking forward to Silver Efx and learning it.
